Chapter 8

Clay spoke with Mason then returned to spend the night with Preston, cuddled together in the same bed after. Mason wasn’t judging them and understood Clay’s need to be upfront about their relationship and also maintain codes of the order. At least he was, once he heard Clay explain it to him. Having sex while in partial gargoyle form created an eternal bond that was stronger than human marriage although it was the only similar institution Preston could compare it to. Sex while only man bonded that gargoyle to the human but not vice versa. The gargoyle would only respond to his partner’s touch from now until death. Having calmed down, Preston understood Clay’s desire for a formal vow. Creating a relationship with someone who wanted to wait for sex until marriage was not a position Preston had ever considered a real option. Yet here he was, and he was ecstatic to be with the friar. Clay told Preston how excited Mason had been to hear that one of his clan was getting married, and he couldn’t wait to officiate the ceremony.

The night was long as they fell asleep in one another’s arms. Once he had finally decided what he wanted, Preston had felt total peace and knew that he needed to follow through with it. Preston had showered and changed into sleep pants while Clay was gone talking to Mason. He didn’t want to make the lack of sex any harder on either of them. Preston wanted to jump Clay each moment he was near him, so he guessed the desire was even stronger for Clay knowing that Preston was his aeternus. The morning couldn’t come fast enough.

Bells tolled early in the morning, and Preston stretched out in Clay’s bed. He reached for Clay, but touched only cool sheets instead. Checking his phone, Preston saw that it was six in the morning. Adjusting to monastic life and schedule would take some time.

Preston swung his legs over the bed and jumped to the ground. Today was a big day, a huge day. They were getting their marriage license. Preston had to call his family and let them know he was getting married. He knew they’d be happy and might even want to come. However, they’d also be shocked as Preston never mentioned dating anyone. He supposed it was a good thing he didn’t often talk about who he was seeing. His family could think he and Clay had been together for a long time. Maybe he should just tell them after the fact and say he eloped. That would prevent a lot of questions about why he was living in a church. Guess he could skip that part, too. He needed to talk to Clay about this some more.

Preston readied himself and left the room to check on Tom. He pushed open Tom’s door without knocking. If Tom was sleeping, he wanted him to stay that way. The sliver of light from the hall illuminated Tom’s face. He was lying in his bed, snoring softly.
